Meatball Gyro Skewers

These cute bites are a little deconstructed appetizer take on my Meatball Gyro recipe. When I saw that they came out with these little naan dippers…the wheels started spinning for recipe ideas. I absolutely LOVE naan bread. Some day I will make my own from scratch, I’ve see some killer looking recipes floating around! They’re so versatile to use for flatbreads, you can go sweet or savory, they’re really just a blank canvas. I’ll link a couple delicious ways to use naan below!

These make for a colorful presentation with fresh cherry tomatoes, refreshing cucumber, meatballs, tangy feta cheese, with my favorite creamy garlicky tzatziki sauce. I used store bought freezer meatballs because I was out of my All-Purpose Meatballs. My favorite store bought meatballs are from Trader Joes, they’re the perfect little appetizer size and really have a homemade taste and texture. These are great even served at room temperature, they’re perfect for a shower, girls night, or work potluck!

Ingredients

  • 7.05 oz naan bread dippers
  • 20 all purpose meatballs thawed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano flakes
  • 10 cherry tomatoes sliced in half
  • 1/2 seedless cucumber sliced then quartered
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • fresh cracked black pepper
  • 20 small skewers

Tzatziki

  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/2 tbsp fresh dill minced
  • 1/2 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 seedless cucumber shredded, drained
  • salt and pepper
  • hot sauce optional

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine all of the tzatziki ingredients together, mix well. Refrigerate until ready to use. The sauce can be made the day before, best if made a few hours ahead!

  2. Bake or microwave naan dippers as directed on the packaging, but can be served room temperature after baking.

  3. Add meatballs, water, and oregano flakes to a medium microwavable bowl. Heat meatballs until warmed through, about 5-6 minutes, stirring every couple minutes. Meatballs can be heated from frozen state, just add a few minutes for microwave time. Season with black pepper if desired.

  4. Slice the other half of the cucumber in about 1/2 inch slices, and then quarter each slice so you're left with 4 triangle shapes for each slice, you'll only need about 20, or however many skewers you are making.

Assembly

  1. Spread desired amount of tzatziki onto each naan dipper. Sprinkle each with feta cheese. Skewer a meatball, cucumber, and half of a cherry tomato onto a toothpick, and place into the naan. Repeat until all naans are used.

Recipe Notes

This recipe can be modified by however many naan dippers you have. I find the naan dippers next to the hummus in my local grocery store. If you can't find the dippers you can buy full sized naan and slice into rounds or squares.

I love mine with added sriracha into the yogurt for a little spice!

Make sure you use oregano flakes, not ground oregano. Ground oregano is much more potent. Fresh could be used as well.
